U.S. Department of Education Charter Schools Program Announces Two Competitions for Non-SEA Applicants

The U.S. Department of Education's Charter Schools Program (CSP) has just announced two new Non-State Educational Agency (Non-SEA) grant competitions for 2013. Applications for both competitions are due July 12, 2013.

The CSP’s Non-SEA Planning, Program Design, and Implementation competition (84.282B) provides grants directly to charter school developers so they can plan, design, and complete the initial implementation of their school. The Non-SEA Dissemination competition (84.282C) provides grants directly to existing public charter schools, which they can use to assist other schools in adapting the charter school program (or certain aspects of the charter schools’ program) or to disseminate information about the charter school.

For FY 2013, the Department is particularly interested in encouraging charter schools to develop and implement innovative strategies to meet the needs of educationally disadvantaged students and other students. Therefore, the Notice includes one a ...MORE

New Charter School Operator Workshop – Friday May 31, 2013

The Oregon Department of Education will be hosting this event to support new charter schools planning to open this fall, charter school administrators new to their role, new charter school board members, and school district charter school liaisons. Topics will include special education, English language learners, state school funding, federal highly qualified to teach requirements, teacher qualifications, and more. The content is tailored to the needs of those new in their position or for a newly approved charter school. If you are interested in attending, please register here.

This meeting is not intended for charter schools in the planning stage. Content has been designed for those schools with an approved proposal, signed charter agreement, or established charter school. 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant Peer Reviewers Recruitment

New Round of 21st Century Community Learning Center Grants Available

SALEM – Today the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) has opened the next competition for $9.5 million in funds for 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) grants. This program supports the creation of community learning centers that provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children, particularly students who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools. The program helps students meet state and local standards in core academic subjects such as reading and math, provides students with a broad array of enrichment activities that can complement their regular academic programs, and offers literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children.

Eligible entities include, but are not limited to, school districts, education service districts, community colleges, faith-based and community organizations, charter schools and city and county agencies. Schools and community organizations are encouraged to apply as partners.
